There’s something wonderful about escaping to the Caribbean with one of your best girlfriends. No complicated schedules, no never-ending to-do lists, and absolutely no guilt about ordering champagne before lunch. Just sunshine, turquoise water, beautiful accommodations, and the kind of laughter that reminds you why girlfriend getaways matter.
That was exactly the spirit of my recent three-night escape to St. Maarten with my friend Mia, where we made the luxurious JW Marriott St. Maarten Beach Resort & Spa our home away from home.
As someone who has traveled extensively in search of the world’s most memorable luxury resorts and wellness experiences, I appreciate a destination that offers more than a beautiful beach. I want exceptional hospitality, opportunities to recharge, wonderful food, and a sense of place that makes a trip feel genuinely special.
St. Maarten offers a fascinating combination of Caribbean beauty and European influences, while the JW Marriott provides a peaceful oceanfront retreat away from some of the island’s busier tourist areas.
And when your accommodations include a private plunge pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, you know you’re in for something special.
Discovering the Quiet Side of St. Maarten
One of the most interesting things about St. Maarten is its dual personality. This relatively small island is shared by two nations: the Dutch side, Sint Maarten, and the French side, Saint-Martin.
The Dutch side is known for its lively restaurants, shopping, casinos, and nightlife, while the French side offers charming villages, French-inspired cuisine, and a distinctly European atmosphere. Together, they create a wonderfully international destination.
Our home base was on the Dutch side, overlooking beautiful Dawn Beach on the island’s eastern coast.
Unlike the bustling atmosphere around some of the island’s cruise ports and popular beaches, this area feels quieter and more secluded. It’s an appealing location for travelers who want to enjoy the island’s natural beauty without sacrificing the comforts of a luxury resort.
The scenic coastal setting immediately encouraged us to slow down, take in the views, and embrace island time.
Checking Into JW Marriott St. Maarten Beach Resort & Spa
Arriving at the JW Marriott St. Maarten feels as if entering a tropical sanctuary. The resort’s contemporary architecture, landscaped grounds, and open, airy spaces complement its spectacular oceanfront location.
What I particularly appreciate about the JW Marriott brand lies in its emphasis on mindfulness and well-being. Rather than treating wellness as an occasional spa appointment, the brand encourages guests to incorporate moments of restoration throughout their stay.
That philosophy feels especially appropriate in the Caribbean, where the sound of the waves along with the warmth of the sunshine naturally invite relaxation.
The resort is sophisticated without feeling excessively formal, making it equally appealing for a romantic getaway, a special celebration, or a long-overdue vacation with a friend.
For Mia & me, it was the perfect setting for a few days of catching up, exploring, and merely enjoying being somewhere so relaxing.
The Ultimate Luxury: Our Oceanfront Plunge Pool Room
If there’s one feature that makes a Caribbean hotel stay feel particularly indulgent, it’s a private plunge pool.
Our accommodations included a plunge pool, providing an intimate outdoor space to relax and enjoy the beautiful oceanfront surroundings.
I love hotel rooms that become part of the vacation experience, not just somewhere to sleep. A beautiful room with a private outdoor retreat invites you to stay a bit longer over your morning coffee or enjoy a still moment before heading to sleep for the night.
For travelers who enjoy spending time at their resort, I think this type of accommodation is worth considering.
There is also something wonderfully restorative about having your own peaceful space after a day exploring the island. You can return to your room, slip into the water, and let the day’s adventures settle into happy memories.
And, of course, a private plunge pool makes a gorgeous backdrop for vacation photos.
For a girls’ getaway, the combination of privacy, ocean views, and luxurious surroundings seemed especially appealing.
A Wellness Escape at the JW Spa
No visit to a luxury resort would feel complete for me without investigating its spa offerings.
After visiting thousands of spas around the world, I’ve learned that the most memorable wellness experiences aren’t necessarily the most elaborate. Sometimes, what we need most is an opportunity to disconnect from our everyday responsibilities and enjoy a little uninterrupted relaxation.
During my stay, my itinerary included a 50-minute Tranquility Massage, a treatment perfectly suited to the slower pace of a Caribbean vacation.
I truly appreciate how a massage can help shift your mindset from travel mode to vacation mode. After navigating airports, packing, and busy schedules, taking time for yourself can make an enormous difference in how you experience the rest of your trip.
Beyond the spa, the resort’s natural surroundings provide opportunities for everyday mindfulness. A walk along Dawn Beach, a calm moment with a book, or simply watching the waves can be just as restorative.
For travelers who want wellness without a rigid retreat schedule, the JW Marriott offers an appealing balance of rest and leisure.
Beachfront Bliss at Dawn Beach
One of the greatest pleasures of staying at the JW Marriott is its location directly on Dawn Beach.
The beach is known for its beautiful coastal scenery, with shades of blue extending toward the horizon plus a picturesque shoreline framed by the surrounding hills.
Our itinerary included a beachfront cabana experience and lunch, a combination that flawlessly captures the appeal of Caribbean luxury.
I love the simplicity of a beach day when everything is taken care of. There’s no need to rush from one attraction to another or worry about finding the perfect place to relax.
Instead, the day can revolve around sunshine, good conversation, and the occasional refreshing drink.
For girlfriends traveling together, a cabana also provides a wonderful setting to catch up. Some of my favorite vacation memories have come from those unplanned conversations that happen when there’s nowhere else you want to be.
Of course, the Caribbean sunshine is beautiful, but I always recommend packing your Indie Lee sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and a lightweight cover-up.
A Culinary Tour Through St. Maarten
One of the things I love most about travel is discovering a destination through its food.
St. Maarten is particularly interesting because its culinary influences go well beyond traditional Caribbean cuisine. French, Dutch, Italian, and world flavors add to a dynamic dining scene.
At the JW Marriott, our dining itinerary included breakfast at Carambola, a restaurant dinner, and an opportunity to explore the resort’s culinary options.
There’s something especially lovely about beginning a tropical morning with coffee, a leisurely breakfast, and no particular reason to hurry.
The resort also offers several settings for enjoying cocktails and meals, including Opal Lobby Lounge and other dining venues.
One of our planned activities was a mixology class at the JW Culinary School. I love experiences like this because they add an interactive element to a luxury vacation. Rather than simply ordering a cocktail, guests can learn about ingredients, preparation techniques, and the art of creating a memorable drink.
Exploring Beyond the Resort: Two Countries, One Island
While it’s tempting to spend an entire vacation relaxing at the JW Marriott, St. Maarten offers plenty of reasons to go beyond the property.
Our itinerary included an island tour, giving us a chance to get acquainted with the destination and appreciate its distinctive character.
One of the island’s most fascinating aspects is the ability to experience two different national cultures without traveling far.
On the Dutch side, Philipsburg is known for its colorful buildings, shopping streets, and waterfront promenade along Great Bay.
The French side offers an entirely different atmosphere, with destinations such as Marigot and Grand Case showcasing French-Caribbean influences.
Grand Case, in particular, has earned a reputation for its dining scene, making it a destination worth considering for travelers who love excellent food.
The island’s scenic overlooks are another highlight. With beautiful bays, green hillsides, and brilliant blue water, St. Maarten offers no shortage of memorable photo opportunities.
For first-time visitors, I recommend setting aside at least part of a day to explore beyond the resort.
Even if your primary goal is relaxation, seeing more of the island adds dimension to the experience and helps you appreciate what makes St. Maarten different from other Caribbean destinations.
Wellness Beyond the Treatment Room
One of the more interesting elements of our resort itinerary was an all-encompassing wellness session with Cheryl Williams.
I appreciate resorts that recognize wellness goes far beyond massage and traditional spa treatments.
Mindfulness, mental health, movement, and meaningful rest are all important components of a balanced lifestyle.
For me, travel has always been about more than discovering beautiful destinations. It’s also a chance to return home refreshed, inspired, and more connected to what matters.
A Caribbean vacation can provide the perfect environment for that kind of reset.
Even small habits, such as staying hydrated, walking along the beach, or setting aside quiet time in the morning, can help you maintain a sense of well-being while traveling.
The beauty of a resort like the JW Marriott is that guests can create their own wellness getaway, whether that means booking spa treatments, enjoying the outdoors, or simply doing less.
Why a Girls’ Getaway Is Good for the Soul
As much as I love luxury accommodations, beautiful beaches, and memorable spa experiences, the best part of a girlfriends’ getaway is often the company.
There’s something special about traveling with a friend who appreciates the same little pleasures: a gorgeous ocean view, an excellent meal, a relaxing afternoon by the pool, and the occasional glass of champagne.
My friend and I had three nights to enjoy St. Maarten, and the trip reminded me how important it is to make time for friendships.
At home, our days can easily get consumed by work, family commitments, and the responsibilities of everyday life.
Travel gives us permission to set those obligations aside for a while and reconnect.
And while a beautiful resort certainly helps set the scene, it’s the sounds of laughter, conversations, and common memories that make the experience truly worthwhile.
I always encourage women to plan that trip they’ve been talking about with their friends.
Don’t wait for the perfect time. Choose a destination, book the flights, and give yourselves something wonderful to look forward to.
Is JW Marriott St. Maarten Worth Visiting?
For travelers looking for a sophisticated Caribbean escape, JW Marriott St. Maarten Beach Resort & Spa is worth considering.
Its setting on Dawn Beach provides a more peaceful alternative to some of the island’s busier areas. At the same time, the resort’s amenities let you enjoy several days of relaxation without feeling the need to venture far.
I particularly recommend considering the resort for a romantic vacation, a luxury girls’ getaway, or a wellness-focused long weekend. It can also be a great destination wedding venue and also perfect for corporate events.
Travelers who appreciate spacious accommodations and private outdoor spaces should explore the plunge pool room categories.
The resort also works well as a base for discovering the island’s varied dining scene, beaches, and cultural attractions.
One consideration is its location on the island’s eastern side. Guests who plan to spend every evening exploring Simpson Bay or the French side should allow time for transportation.
However, travelers who value a peaceful oceanfront setting may find that separation from the busiest tourist areas part of the appeal.
Planning Your Own St. Maarten Escape
Getting There: Fly into Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), which serves the Dutch side of the island. Arrange transportation to the resort in advance for a smoother arrival.
How Long to Stay: Three nights work well for a long weekend, but four or five nights gives you more time to explore both sides of the island while still enjoying the resort.
When to Visit: St. Maarten is a year-round Caribbean destination.
What to Pack: Lightweight resort wear, comfortable sandals, swimwear, sunscreen, and a beautiful outfit or two for dinner. I also recommend bringing a light layer for air-conditioned restaurants.
Final Thoughts: A Little Luxury, a Lot of Cheer
After years of exploring luxury resorts and wellness destinations around the world, I’ve come to appreciate that the best vacations aren’t necessarily the ones with the busiest itineraries.
Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are surprisingly simple.
Morning coffee overlooking the ocean. A relaxing spa appointment. A delicious dinner with a friend. An afternoon spent beside the water with absolutely nowhere else to be.
Our girls’ getaway to St. Maarten gave us the chance to enjoy those moments in a beautiful Caribbean setting.
With its oceanfront location, inviting accommodations, wellness offerings, and access to the island’s fascinating mix of cultures, JW Marriott St. Maarten Beach Resort & Spa is an inviting choice for travelers looking to combine luxury with relaxation.
And if you’re thinking about planning your own girlfriends’ getaway, consider this your notice that making time for friendship is always a good investment.
Especially when there’s champagne involved.
