As National Preservation Month approaches this May, Charleston, S.C., invites visitors to explore its deep-rooted commitment to preserving the past. Charleston’s protection of architectural heritage is a legacy dating back to 1920, with the founding of the country’s first community-based historic preservation organization, the Preservation Society of Charleston. Preservation Month is the perfect time to explore one of the country’s most well-preserved cities with a stay at the historic Ansonborough Hotel.
Nestled in and named after Charleston’s oldest neighborhood, The Ansonborough is a reimagined luxury boutique hotel that embodies the vibrant spirit of Charleston, offering travelers an authentic local experience with modern amenities. Built in 1901 as a stationer’s warehouse, the building is steeped in history with many of its original elements, including the exposed brick and wood beams, preserved with great care. Throughout the hotel, design elements pay tribute to the neighborhood’s colorful past, such as a hidden poker room tucked behind a lobby bookshelf, a reference to when British Royal Navy Officer George Anson won the land in a high-stakes card game in the 1700s. The Scarborough & Squirrel Bar, named after two warships that once guarded the coastline, offers elevated light fare, artisanal cocktails, and a selection of wines and beers.
