There’s something incredibly special about this stage of life. A time in your life where a coastal escape may just be the answer ….. to everything.

The schedules finally slow down. The house gets quieter. And suddenly, there’s space again for the things that matter most — reconnecting, relaxing, traveling slower, and simply enjoying time together.

That’s exactly what we found during our time in North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands.

Tucked along the North Carolina coast, this collection of charming beach towns offers a coastal escape that feels refreshingly peaceful. Wide uncrowded beaches, fresh seafood, cozy waterfront stays, dog-friendly adventures, spa afternoons, ferry rides, and breathtaking sunsets create the perfect setting for couples, friends, and wellness-focused travelers looking to truly unwind.

And honestly? Sometimes luxury simply looks like slowing down.

Where We Stayed

Our home away from home was a beautiful waterfront property found through HOBBS Realty, and it immediately set the tone for the entire coastal escape trip.

Mornings started slowly with coffee and ocean breezes, while evenings ended with sunset views, flutes of champagne, and peaceful nights by the water. No sound machines needed here – only the waves. It’s the kind of destination where you immediately exhale the moment you arrive.

One of our favorite moments was relaxing by the ocean playing Mahjong with friends we met on the beach!

Relaxation Comes Naturally Here

In North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands, the pace is meant to slow you down so you can actually enjoy where you are.

We spent our days taking long walks on quiet beaches, enjoying waterfront dining, exploring charming coastal towns, and simply soaking in the slower pace of island life.

One afternoon, while my husband headed off for golf, I escaped for a little solo relaxation time at Island Retreat Spa on Bald Head Island. Between the peaceful setting and restorative treatments, it felt like the ultimate coastal wellness reset.

That’s what makes Brunswick Islands feel so restorative: wellness happens naturally through sunshine, salt air, ocean views, and meaningful moments together.

The Perfect Destination for Empty Nesters

That’s why Brunswick Islands feels tailor-made for couples entering their empty nest era.

This is the destination for:

  • Sunset dinners by the water
  • Slow mornings with coffee by the beach
  • Scenic ferry rides
  • Long conversations without distractions
  • Beach walks with your dogs.
  • Relaxing afternoons with nowhere to be

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, reconnecting after busy years of parenting, or simply prioritizing more intentional travel together, Brunswick Islands creates the perfect backdrop for it all.

Romance here feels effortless.

Coastal Dining We Loved

One of the highlights of the trip was the incredible coastal dining scene. Fresh seafood, casual waterfront restaurants, local coffee shops, and coastal cocktails made every meal feel like part of the vacation experience.

Some favorite spots included:

  • The Wharf Holden Beach (@thewharfhb)
  • Fishy Fishy Café (@fishyfishycafe)
  • Provision Company Holden Beach (@provisioncompanyhb)
  • Jinks Creek (@jinkscreek)
  • Café Ahora (@thecafeahora)
  • Ocean Boulevard Coffee (@oceanblvd.coffeenc)
  • Jailhouse Provisions (@jailhousebhi)

And yes — the famous Calabash shrimp absolutely lived up to the hype.

For sweet treats and local favorites, we also loved:

  • Aunt Irene’s Sweets-N-Treats
  • The Scoop
  • Saltwater Shanty (our favorite)

For wine lovers, Silver Coast Winery was the perfect relaxing stop to round out a coastal afternoon.

Exploring Bald Head Island

One of the most memorable experiences was taking the ferry over to Bald Head Island.

The ferry ride itself instantly slows the pace and feels like stepping into another world. Once there, we explored the island’s peaceful beauty and charming scenery and visited the iconic Old Baldy Lighthouse, the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina.

Bald Head Island perfectly captures the quiet, laid-back charm that makes Brunswick Islands so special, and the Island Retreat Spa made it even harder to leave.

Wellness, Friendship & Coastal Moments

This trip wasn’t only about romance — it was also about reconnecting with ourselves and with friends, which made the experience even more meaningful.

From relaxing beach afternoons to Mahjong games by the coast, the entire experience reminded me how important it is to create space for joy, friendship, and wellness.

Sometimes self-care is a spa treatment.

Sometimes it’s a sunset cocktail.

Sometimes it’s laughter with friends while listening to waves roll in nearby.

Brunswick Islands gives you space for it all.

Dog-Friendly Stays & The Ice Cream We Still Talk About

One of the things we loved most about North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands was how genuinely dog-friendly the entire destination felt. This was the most dog friendly coastal escape I have ever been on with my four-legged friends.

From peaceful beach walks to outdoor dining spots and welcoming accommodations, it made traveling with our dogs feel easy and relaxing instead of stressful. Being able to enjoy slow mornings, waterfront sunsets, and coastal adventures together made the trip even more special.

Our stay with HOBBS was the perfect home base for an easygoing coastal getaway, with plenty of room to unwind after long beach days.

And we have to talk about ice cream.

And we have to talk about ice cream, because somehow this relaxing beach trip led us to some of the best homemade ice cream we’ve ever had at Saltwater Shanty and The Scoop.

The kind you keep thinking about long after vacation ends.

After beach days and sunset dinners, stopping for homemade ice cream quickly became part of our nightly routine, and it remains one of our favorite memories.

Sometimes it’s the simple moments you remember most. Like a Coastal Escape to North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands!
