Minto Suite Hotel is a four diamond all suites hotel in Ottawa, recognized not only for their high class accommodation solutions, but also for their commitment to making the world a little greener with their eco friendly hotels in Canada. Minto Suite Hotel pertains to the Minto Group, which is an Ottawa based real estate, construction, development, and property management organization. Established in 1955, the Minto Group currently holds operations in Toronto, London (Ontario), Calgary (Alberta) and Florida (Miami).
With guests becoming increasingly more aware of the importance of a green approach in all aspects of living, more and more hospitality facilities seek ways to make a real difference when it comes to the environment. The Green-Key Eco-Rating Program initiated by the Hotel Association of Canada is the ultimate test where hotels get recognized for their high standards of social and environmental responsibility across all areas of their operations.
Although more than 3,000 hotels participated in 2012’s Green Key Eco-Rating program, only 55 hotels in North America have achieved 5 Key Eco-Ratings. Minto was one of the 5 Ontario-based hotels to have been honored with the 5 Key- Eco Rating, a distinction that reflects Minto’s dedication to being green in all aspects of their work, from the technologies they use, to the policies and programs that set the international standard for sustainable hotel operations.
The achievement of the 5 Key Eco-Rating is a great honor for the employees of Minto Properties. Their success is the symbol of their dedication to the implementation of many environmental initiatives and inspired thinking. In recognition of their extraordinary level of commitment to making the world a better place, Minto also attained BOMA Best Level 3, which is a Canadian industry standard for green building certification granted by the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada.
Minto Suite Hotel joined the exclusive ranks of environmentally-aware hotels in September 2012 after receiving the 4 key rating two years earlier. There are many elements that contributed to the hotel’s success in this highly competitive test, including their 100% smoke-free policy, as well as their participation in government energy reduction programs, such as Save-on-Energy. In addition, increased staff training in environmental awareness and behavior and the introduction of eco-friendly products and amenities also played a significant part in their accomplishment.
The Green Key Rating Program evaluates sustainable practices in five operational areas, including corporate environmental management, housekeeping, food and beverage operations, and conference and meeting facilities. As a result, Minto included in their operations recycling and composting programs, reusable white boards in conference rooms, high efficiency appliances for food and beverage preparation, bulk purchases in reusable containers, safe disposal of hazardous waste, or performing energy, waste, and water audits on a routine basis.
Through the 5 Key-rating distinction, Minto has becomes one of a handful of eco-friendly hotels in Canada using sustainable practices that include waste management, energy and water conservation, building infrastructure, indoor air quality, community outreach, and land use and environmental management.
