Vacations are all about relaxing, enjoying yourself, and perhaps even overindulging in food, drink, and fun that might otherwise be forbidden. As a result, sticking to your training regime while traveling can be a serious challenge.
Staying motivated and keeping on top of your exercise schedule is can be tough at the best of times, and when the beach is calling and you are tempted by delicious local delicacies and just one more refreshing fresh fruit cocktail, it is even harder.
But gains don’t happen by themselves, and as every exercise fan knows, consistency is the key to success. So staying on top of your training, even on vacation, is vital.
So whether you are lazing on a paradise beach in the Caribbean, cruising to Mexico, or heading off on a cross-country road trip, here are a few tips and tricks to help you stay motivated and active throughout your vacation.
Walk on the beach
Keeping up with cardio on vacation doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, it can be a hugely enjoyable part of your trip! Wake up early, head down to the beach, and go for a long walk on the sand. Walking on the beach is great exercise – the soft sand makes it harder and more effort than an ordinary walk, as well as being easier on your joints and muscles! Plus, you’ll get the chance to watch the sun come up, and soak up the gorgeous atmosphere as the waves come in.
Try a new activity
Rather than limiting your exercise options, a vacation actually gives you loads of opportunities to try a new activity and keep moving, just in a way you might not normally do. If you are on the beach, why not try surfing, windsurfing, sailing, or even beach volleyball? In the mountains? Go rock climbing or trail running. Even a city break will offer plenty of new activities to try, from cycling to swimming. Think outside the box, step outside your normal comfort zone, and you’ll see how easy it is to maintain a great training routine on vacation.
Discover yoga
Mindfulness and wellness are huge trends in travel and tourism these days, and yoga is one of the most popular activities you can do on vacation. And it just so happens that it is a great addition to your training routine, as well as being a pretty serious workout in its own right! Work your core, build strength and flexibility, and center yourself, all at the same time. And as an extra added bonus, yoga on vacation tends to be practiced in the most beautiful settings!
Go for a hike
If you are staying somewhere with great trails, impressive scenery, and a load of natural beauty, why not get outside, into the wild, and go for a hike? This is one of the easiest ways to stay fit and healthy on vacation, something that everyone can do, and an activity that can be tailored to the fitness levels and abilities of everyone in your family or group. Plus you’ll get the chance to explore places you might never otherwise get a chance to!
Make your regular workout an event
Of course, there’s no reason you can’t stick to your regular workout routine, particularly if you tend to go for HIIT routines or bodyweight exercises. Try working out on the beach, or on your balcony overlooking the forests or mountains, to help with motivation!
Sticking to your training on vacation doesn’t have to be a challenge, and with a little creativity, you can make it an enjoyable part of your trip!
