Why People Travel Abroad for Cosmetic Surgery
Welcome Guest Blogger Isabella of The Cosmetic Surgery Guru Blog from over the pond in London, England. After my last trip there, I became aware that Europeans put much more value on spas and proper skincare, but their other passion was a little surprising to me. Just like Hollywood Celebrities, they are traveling abroad for cosmetic surgery. Isabella will tell us more about this phenomenon below:
Why People Travel Abroad for Cosmetic Surgery
Many people are unhappy with their looks and choose to have cosmetic surgery in the UK. Surgical procedures such as face lifts are extremely popular and take place in a host of approved clinics. Before signing up with an approved clinic, it is a good precautionary measure to investigate if their staff is indeed composed of registered nurses and surgical technologists who have all attended surgical tech schools.
There are a number of Brits, however, who opt to have both surgical and non-surgical procedures overseas. They travel many miles to have their bodies changed and their imperfections ironed out in some way – but is it wise to leave the comfort of your own home?
Let’s take a look at why some people go abroad for cosmetic procedures.
Cheap surgery abroad
Every year, many people fly across the world to have cheap plastic surgery. Countries such as Thailand and Hungary carry out low-priced operations daily and these low rates attract foreigners. With the economy in crisis, a number of Brits fly abroad to get nipped and tucked as it seems like a practical solution. Nevertheless, many people forget to take into account various travel costs and end up paying over the odds to get to their chosen destination.
Excitement of travel
Believe it or not, some Brits have cosmetic surgery abroad because they love to travel. They head off to India, Poland or Korea and combine their desire to look good with their passion to explore. While it’s easy to understand the appeal of a holiday, many people forget that they are heading for an operation. It usually takes a few weeks to recover from surgery and so rushing to all the local tourist spots is likely to be out of the question.
Vanity
Many patients decided to have surgery abroad as they are afraid of what they will look like during recovery. Of course, the healing procedure is usually quick and straightforward, however, some people just need a bit of privacy. Choosing to have something like a nose job is a big decision and getting away can help a person mentally. You may argue that in times of need people should call on their friends and family – but everyone is different.
Renowned clinics
Some people will only check into cosmetic surgery clinics that are frequented by the celebrities. They want liposuction in Hollywood, mole-removal in Malibu and a nose job in LA. While there are many professional surgeries around the world, some of the best are also in the UK. So, if you want a hair transplant or something else, why not check out the range of clinics close to home?
Whether you decide to have surgery abroad or in the UK it’s always wise to weigh up your options carefully.

My name is Ava, the Spa Travel Gal (originally from My Skin Concierge, Ava). I believe that skincare, spa and travel experiences are not a luxury, but essential for both a healthy body and mind.
I believe that other countries have better equipment and guidance which we can’t find in our metropolitan cities. That’s why most of the people going abroad for cheap plastic surgery.
Most people travel abroad to have cosmetic surgeries because the procedures are usually cheaper in countries than in UK or US, with the added perks of being a tourist. In Thailand, a lot of foreigners can be seen enjoying the exotic tropical beaches. The modern yet affordable services also await them. That’s why medical tourism is a hit in Southeast Asian countries.
Aside from the lower charge fees, another fact about why people prefer cosmetic surgeries abroad is because of the tourist attractions that they haven’t been to and the sights that they have only seen through television, ads, and in the internet. Indeed, Asia has been one of the top destination not just because of the cheaper cost, but also the standards of care of their surgery industry has to offer.
Thanks for all the discussion! Do you see this increasing in 2012? What are your predictions?
